Manchester United’s search for a new manager was swift and decisive, with Ruben Amorim set to take over in the coming weeks.
The Portuguese tactician will inherit a squad built for Erik ten Hag, but he’s likely to put his own stamp on the team.
Amorim’s appointment comes after Ten Hag’s inevitable sacking just two months into the season. United’s poor start, sitting 14th in the Premier League, and without a win in Europe, prompted INEOS to act swiftly.
Amorim’s track record at Sporting suggests he’s the perfect man for the job. He’ll aim to build a team in his image, and that might involve bringing in some familiar faces from Lisbon.
Here are three players the incoming United boss could sign in the January window.
Geny Catamo (Wing-back)
Catamo, 23, is one of Sporting’s brightest prospects. Amorim nurtured him into a dynamic two-way wing-back, capable of playing on either flank. He is extremely quick and for a team struggling at wig-back, he will certainly be the perfect addition.
Morten Hjulmand (Midfielder)
With Christian Eriksen’s contract expiring and Casemiro turning 32, United require midfield reinforcements. Morten Hjulmand, 25, fits the bill. The Danish international thrived under Amorim at Sporting, providing defensive solidity and progressive passing. He could be an excellent investment.
Viktor Gyokeres (Striker)
Gyokeres has been unstoppable in Lisbon, scoring 57 goals in 64 appearances since arriving from Coventry. His pace, power, and movement would terrorize Premier League defenders. Amorim’s tactics unlocked Gyokeres’ full potential, transforming him into one of Europe’s deadliest strikers and he is far superior to the likes of Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund, who have struggled to make their mark.
