Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown has been honoured with the Yoruba ancestral name “Babatunde” during a visit to the palace of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Brown, the 2024 NBA Finals MVP, was received at the Enuwa Palace by the traditional ruler alongside palace chiefs and other dignitaries during the cultural visit.
The Ooni formally bestowed the name “Babatunde” on the NBA star, explaining that it recognises his ancestral connection to the Yoruba people. The name, which means “the father/ancestor has returned,” carries significant cultural meaning in Yoruba tradition.
“This is to certify that you have been officially issued Babatunde as your traditional and ancestral name. Henceforth, you shall be known as Babatunde Jaylen Brown,” the Ooni declared.
Oba Ogunwusi also highlighted Ile-Ife’s historical importance as the cradle of Yoruba civilisation, while reflecting on the impact of the transatlantic slave trade and the forced migration of millions of Africans.
The monarch encouraged members of the African diaspora, particularly prominent athletes, entertainers and other public figures, to visit ancestral sites across Africa as a way of reconnecting with their heritage and strengthening ties that were disrupted by centuries of forced displacement.
Brown, who has been vocal about social issues and African-American history, welcomed the experience and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to learn more about his heritage.
“This experience has given me an opportunity to learn more about my roots,” Brown said, while encouraging people of African descent around the world to explore their cultural and ancestral identity.
The visit adds Brown to a growing list of prominent Black American figures exploring their African heritage, with Ile-Ife serving as an important destination for those seeking a deeper connection to Yoruba history and culture.
