Gabriel Agbonlahor has warned Anthony Martial he may have to settle for a place on the bench if he’s not willing to move wide to accomodate Edinson Cavani.
Cavani is pushing to become a regular starter after coming off the bench to score twice and provide an assist as Manchester United fought back from 2-0 down against Southampton.
Martial, who has largely operated through the middle for United this season, missed the game through illness but faces a fight to keep his place as the team’s first-choice striker.
Agbonlahor, the former Aston Villa attacker, believes he will have to accept moving out wide again as Cavani continues to prove his worth.
And he suggested that if Martial kicked up a fuss, he might even find himself on the bench.
‘Edinson Cavani, in his whole career he’s scored goals,’ Agbonlahor told talkSport. ‘He knows how to score goals.
‘If you look at the two goals against Southampton, he’s in the box, he knows what runs to make.
‘If you want to try and fit in players as well, you can play Martial and Rashford either side of him.
‘I think he’s that player that can get the goals that Manchester United are going to need this season.’
Asked if Martial would be annoyed at losing the centre-forward position and being moved out wide, Agbonlahor replied: ‘He might be annoyed but this is Manchester United.
‘I didn’t like playing on the left wing but half of my career I played there.
‘You get on with it and you play where you’re told for the team. If Cavani is the main striker, I’m sure Martial… if he doesn’t want to play there, he can sit on the bench!’
