Nine-time African champions Nigeria defeated visiting Algeria in the first of two international friendly matches between the two nations on Saturday, October 26, 2024.
Two spectacular goals from captain Rasheedat Ajibade in the first half in Ikenne-Remo sealed the win for the Super Falcons.
Following a nice pass by defender Oluwatosin Demehin, Nigeria’s first goal came in the 24th minute when Ajibade ran past the Green Ladies’ defense and lifted the ball over and above the advancing goalkeeper Amel Salah.
Just before referee, Christelle Ligan’s halftime whistle blew, the attacking midfielder from Spain grabbed the ball from Folashade Ijamilusi as Nigeria surged forward to fire a rocket from 22 yards out that went straight into the top corner.
During a fun match at the top privately owned sports complex in the nation, Remo Stars Sports Complex, Esther Onyenezide missed a close-range shot in the 44th minute, while Salah stopped Ijamilusi in the 66th and 90th minutes.
In the 75th minute, Algeria had their finest opportunity but were unable to convert.
The Super Falcons return to action against Algeria in a rematch against Algeria scheduled for Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
