Shearer, the former Newcastle United striker, rates the Premier League’s most recent title winners as the favourites to win the 2020/21 crown.
Liverpool head into Sunday’s clash against Manchester City at the top of the table, with Pep Guardiola’s outfit lagging behind in 10th place, albeit with a game in hand.
Both teams have suffered setbacks so far this season, City have only won three of their opening six matches and have been without recognised strikers Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus for large parts of the campaign.
Jurgen Klopp’s team were thrashed 7-2 by Aston Villa and handed an injury hammer blow by losing Virgil van Dijk but they have still placed themselves on top of the pile.
While other clubs have got off to decent starts, including Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, Shearer still views City as the main challengers to Liverpool’s title.
‘At the minute I still think it will be between City and Liverpool,’ Shearer told The Athletic.
‘Although Liverpool suffered a huge loss in losing Van Dijk for the season.
‘It should be a great game on Sunday and it’s a game that City need to win because they can’t afford to fall eight points behind.’
