Alan Shearer thinks Manchester United are ‘lacking’ a quality centre-forward – something that was highlighted by their limp display against Manchester City.
The Manchester giants played out a limp 0-0 draw on Saturday evening, with United struggling to muster any chances.
With Edinson Cavani out injured, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood were tasked with providing an outlet but Shearer felt they didn’t make good enough runs into the six yard box for creative force Bruno Fernandes.
And he believes Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain attacker Kylian Mbappe would be the ideal signings in that position.
‘Cavani, they’ve got him. He’s 34 in February,’ Shearer told Match of the Day.
‘Greenwood may be that man in two or three years time because he’s got fantastic potential.
‘But I think they need a top class centre forward in this team.
‘Greenwood and Rashford should be in and around that six yard box, there’s no one there, no one at all, nothing on for Bruno.
‘They’ve got to get in there more often. It was far, far too easy an afternoon for Stones and for Diaz. That’s what I think they’re lacking and it showed today.’
Asked who he would sign for Manchester United if money was no object, Shearer replied: ‘Haaland or Mbappe.’
