Alex Telles has reassured Manchester United fans he is ‘fine’ after testing positive for coronavirus, thanking them for their support and vowing to return as strong as ever.

The summer signing from Porto had a promising debut against PSG last week but was mysteriously absent from the matchday squads for follow-up games against Chelsea and RB Leipzig.

Speaking after United’s thumping 5-0 win over the Bundesliga side on Wednesday night, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that the Brazilian would need to self-isolate until he returns a negative result.

‘Telles has tested positive for coronavirus, he’s been out for a few days,’ he told MUTV. ‘No symptoms, he’ll be fine, back soon.’

The 27-year-old must self-isolate for two weeks meaning he will miss fixtures against Arsenal, Istanbul Basaksehir and Everton and will likely not return to the first team until after the international break.

Telles would have been eager to build on his performance against PSG and try and force his way into the side, with his positive test setting back those aspirations, though he is remaining upbeat.

Writing on Instagram after the news emerged, Telles said: ‘Guys, I want to thank you for the messages of affection I received from the moment that United announced that I have been diagnosed with Covid-19.

‘I want to say that I am fine, isolated and soon will be back with all my strength to help my teammates.

‘Once again, thank you all for your lovely messages!’

In the absence of Telles, Luke Shaw continued at left-back against Leipzig and contributed to United’s second clean sheet of the season in a matter of days as the Red Devils ran riot in the second half against Leipzig.

Next up, United host Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday with hat-trick hero Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes both set to start after coming off the bench late on against Leipzig.
