Alisson jumped to the defence of Roberto Firmino after Diogo Jota strengthened his case for a starting spot at Liverpool with a terrific hat-trick in the side’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Atalanta.
The Merseyside giants maintained their 100 per cent record in the Champions League thanks to goals from Jota (3), Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane and the result means Jurgen Klopp’s men have now won their last five matches in all competitions.
Summer arrival Jota has had a barnstorming start to his Reds career, netting seven times in his opening 10 appearances for the club, and the Portugal international is putting serious pressure on Firmino for regular place in Klopp’s attack.
Speaking to Esporte Interativo shortly after the final whistle, Alisson hailed Jota’s impact but insisted that fellow countyrman Firmino remained an integral player for Liverpool going forward.
‘He is a very hard-working, high quality and humble guy,’ Alisson said when asked about Jota.
‘He came to help us and has further proved that our team is not just one player.
‘We have a very strong squad and group. Today there were a number of changes to the team.
‘I don’t even need to talk about the importance of Firmino, for everything he has done for the club and everything he has been doing.
‘He is a very supportive player, who works for the team. We need everyone on their toes to achieve our goals going forward.’
‘It involves a lot of work, a lot of communication on the pitch when changes happen,’ the Liverpool and Brazil goalkeeper added.
‘The way we play is very well defined, everyone attacks and runs when necessary. Our team is very supportive and helps the players who come into the team.
‘Obviously we will miss Van Dijk because he is one of the best in the world.
‘We are missing Fabinho too, but he has time to recover to be 100 per cent again.’
