Houssem Aouar has given Arsenal another glimpse of what they desperately need with an impressive backheel assist for Lyon.
The France international was one of Mikel Arteta’s top targets in the summer transfer window but Arsenal were unable to agree a fee with Lyon.
Aouar ended up remaining with the French club and has been in impressive form this month with two assists in his last three appearances.
In the 2-2 draw with Brest on Wednesday evening, Aouar showed superb awareness as he set up Maxwel Cornet with a backheel without even looking at his Lyon teammate.
However, Lyon were unable to hold out for the win as Brest scored a last-gasp equaliser in injury time.
Arsenal have reportedly retained their interest in Aouar ahead of the January transfer window, with Edu even admitting that Arteta’s midfield is crying out for some much-needed creativity.
However, Aouar dealt a blow to Arsenal’s hopes of a January deal earlier this month by claiming that he wants to remain at Lyon until the end of the season.
‘I do not see how I could be unhappy in my city, in my club. That is something that I do not understand,’ Aouar said.
‘I am very happy to be here, I took the decision to stay with the club that formed me, I savour every day I have here.
‘I am very happy to be here, we have an enormous amount of ambitions for this season.’
