The France international winger has struggled to live up to his price tag following his €105 million transfer three years ago with a series of injury setbacks and disciplinary breaches undermining his progress.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had identified Jadon Sancho as his primary transfer target this summer but is reluctantly considering alternative options with his hopes of signing the Borussia Dortmund star this summer fading.
Dembele was left on the bench last night as Barcelona continued their 100% start to life under new manager Ronald Koeman with a 3-0 win over Celta Vigo.
The Dutchman, who is keen to sign his compatriot Memphis Depay, insisted Dembele’s lack of involvement was purely tactical and Planes was equally adamant that the 23-year-old is capable of reasling his potential at Barcelona this season.
‘There are no negotiations with United for Dembele,’ he said. ‘We count on him a lot and we hope that this year he can show his best version.’
While Barcelona may have to wait until next week’s deadline to sign Depay, they have added to their squad this week in the shape of Sergino Dest, who decided to join the Catalan giants ahead of Champions League holders Bayern Munich.
‘Explaining his decision, the 19-year-old said: ‘I’m very happy to be at Barcelona and I will give everything I have to win all the possible titles.Being at Barca is a dream come true.
‘Being at Barça is a great experience, everything is very big, the dressing room, everything. Bayern are a great side but I have followed my heart and that is why I signed for Barca.
‘It is incredibly exciting to meet Messi, I’ve looked up to him and I will run as much as I have to. My expectations are to find my place in the team, play good games and help win titles, I want to thank everyone who has helped me all the way to get here.’
