Hansi Flick has congratulated Liverpool on the signing of the ‘extraordinary’ Thiago Alcantara.
The Premier League champions made the Spain international one of their primary transfer targets this summer and are now preparing to welcome the 29-year-old to Anfield after agreeing a fee in the region of £27million with their German counterparts.
Thiago is due to undertake a medical within the next 24 hours and will adopt the No.6 shirt vacated by Dejan Lovren who joined Zenit Saint Petersburg earlier this summer.
Bayern completed an astonishing treble success last season and Thiago played an instrumental role in a side which swept all before them, both home and abroad, following Flick’s appointment as Niko Kovac’s successor back in November.
Addressing Thiago’s impending departure ahead of Friday’s Bundesliga opener against Schalke, Flick said: ‘Thiago is an extraordinary player and was very important for us. My coaching team and I enjoyed working with him.
‘It was very emotional as we said goodbye. I can only congratulate Liverpool as they got a great player and especially a great person.
‘Thiago gave the team a lot of options and made us unpredictable, he solved things in ways you don’t expect. Now we’re losing yet another great player. We are in contact with Hasan and we are confident that we can still do something.’
While Bayern will be waving goodbye to a key member of their team, Leroy Sane is in line to make his competitive debut.
The Champions League holders already boast the likes of Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman in wide positions, but were still willing to pay €50milion to sign the former Manchester City star who missed most of last season through injury.
