Germany midfielder Leon Goretzka has confirmed he turned down a personal plea from Jurgen Klopp to join Liverpool.
The Bayern Munich star has been one of the standout players in the Bundesliga over the last 12 months, following a slow start to life at the Allianz Arena in 2018.
The German was tracked by a host of top European clubs after it became clear that he would leave Schalke in 2018 once his contract expired.
Klopp’s Liverpool revolution was already underway when the German boss made a move for Goretzka and tried to convince the midfielder that his future should be at Anfield.
However, though Goretzka is happy that Klopp has found success at Liverpool, he says he’s happy with his decision to join Bayern.
‘Liverpool were a consideration of course,’ he told the Athletic.
‘They’re a great club and their development since Kloppo came has been amazing.
‘We’re all a little proud of him winning the title, but I was 100 per cent sure that Bayern was the right move for me.’
He was a mainstay in Bayern’s side last term as the Bavarians completed a Treble, which was finished off with a Champions League final win against Paris Saint-Germain.
