Chelsea blast five past sorry Southampton

Chelsea continued their impressive run of form as they thrashed Southampton 5-1 at the St Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday night.

Enzo Maresca’s men took an early lead in the 7th minute when Axel Disasi headed the ball home from an Enzo Fernandez corner. The lead did not last long however, as Joe Aribo equalized for the Southampton just four minutes later.

Chelsea’s lead was restored after an error by Southampton keeper was capitalized on by Noni Madueke, allowing Christopher Nkunku to slot the ball into an empty net.

Madueke then curled in a third in the 34th minute before Saints’ night went from bad to worse as their captain, Jack Stephens was sent off for violent conduct after pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair.

Chelsea completely dominated the second half and eventually scored again when Palmer tapped the ball into an empty net after Nkunku’s shot dribbled past Lumley.
Substitute Jadon Sancho scored his first Chelsea goal and Chelsea’s fifth of the night three minutes from time to complete a comprehensive victory for the visitors.

The result moves Chelsea up to second place behind Liverpool, while Southampton remain at the foot of the table.
