The Germany international has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and is yet to play a single minute in the Premier League this season.
With Frank Lampard favouring a partnership of Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma at the heart of his defence, Rudiger’s future at Chelsea is now in doubt.
According to Sport, Barcelona are in the market for a new central defender in the January transfer window and Manchester City’s Eric Garcia is their top target.
However, the report claims that if Barca are unable to bring Garcia back to Camp Nou, their alternative target is Rudiger.
Chelsea are understood to be willing to cash in on Rudiger having signed him in a £33.3 million deal from Roma in 2017.
And the 27-year-old is understood to be open to joining Barcelona before the season ends.
Speaking on his future last month, Rudiger told The Athletic: ‘The club didn’t tell me that it was absolutely necessary for me to find a new club and that they definitely didn’t have me in their plans for the next few months.
‘I also turned down one or two options myself. I wasn’t prepared to pack it all in simply because I had been left out a few times. I enjoy living in London and like being at Chelsea.
‘There was a possibility of a loan deal, in order for me to get more game time. Due to many different reasons and the shortage of time, nothing materialised in the end.’
Joel Matip is also on Barcelona’s radar but Liverpool are unwilling to part with the 29-year-old following the long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
Sport also report that Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi is also being considered due to his experience in La Liga with Valencia.
