The Chicago Sky have announced the addition of Rena Wakama to their coaching staff as an assistant coach.
Wakama, who led Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, to historic achievements, joins Head Coach Tyler Marsh’s team alongside assistants Courtney Paris and Tanisha Wright.
Under Wakama’s leadership, D’Tigress secured their fourth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title in August 2023, making her the first female coach to achieve this feat.
She further guided the team to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics, marking the first time an African team, male or female, advanced beyond the group stage in Olympic basketball history. Her outstanding performance earned her the Best Coach award from FIBA.
Expressing his enthusiasm about the new appointment, Coach Tyler Marsh stated, “Rena has proven that she has a winning mindset and attitude. She is an excellent young leader and coach who will make a significant impact on the Sky’s program.”
Wakama’s coaching career includes roles at Tulane University and Stony Brook University, where she contributed to significant team successes.
She also spent six years at Manhattan College, serving as the director of basketball operations before transitioning to an assistant coach role.
In response to her appointment, Wakama expressed gratitude and excitement: “I am honored and thankful for Jeff and Tyler for granting me the opportunity to join the Chicago Sky family. Tyler has one of the best basketball minds in the industry, and I’m excited to help him bring his vision to life.”
