Craig Burley wants to see Olivier Giroud keep his starting berth ahead of Tammy Abraham for Chelsea’s clash against Leeds United this weekend after his heroic display in their 4-0 victory over Sevilla on Wednesday night.
The Frenchman scored all four of his side’s goals as they romped to an emphatic victory in Spain and secured top spot in their Champions League group.
Giroud has fallen behind the likes of Abraham and Timo Werner in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, but was gifted a rare start against Sevilla.
The 34-year-old rewarded his manager’s faith in him with a marvellous display which saw him become the oldest player in Champions League history to score a hat-trick.
But former Blues midfielder Burley believes the World Cup winner deserves his place in the starting XI to face the Whites at Stamford Bridge.
‘Abraham’s done well, but the experience and quality and not just that the finishes that he produced tonight, I say Giroud at the weekend and I think he’s nailed it tonight,’ Burley told ESPN FC.
And Burley praised the strength in depth of Chelsea’s talented squad which he feels is up there with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.
‘Almost as impressive if not more impressive was I think something like seven changes, the whole back four changed,’ Burley added.
‘No Kante, no Werner no Ziyech from the start, Abraham didn’t start and they kept another clean sheet away from home in a game they wanted to win because they wanted to finish top of the group.
‘What a squad that is, arguably as good a squad in the Premier League as any other club and I include Liverpool and Manchester City because it’s quality players that are coming.
‘Pulisic, Hudson-Odoi, Jorginho, Rudiger, Azpliciueta, all these guys are hugely experienced players.’
