United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bring in a central defender with pace to make up for Harry Maguire’s lack of mobility and has reportedly identified Upamecano as his priority target in this position.
The 21-year-old is regarded as one of the finest young centre-backs in European football and his performances in last season’s Champions League, most notably his outstanding display against Atletico Madrid, made clubs across the continent sit up and take notice.
And despite Upamecano putting pen to paper on a three-year extension at Leipzig in July, the Frenchman’s camp were given permission to talk to rival teams over a possible departure from the Bundesliga outfit.
However, in a TV interview withTelefoot’s Culture Foot programme this week, Upamecano appeared to commit his short-term future to Leipzig despite strong interest from Europe’s elite.
‘For the moment I am with Leipzig but it is true that I was able to discuss with certain clubs,’ he said.
‘As I said, for now I am focused on Leipzig and I will continue to play for Leipzig. And then we’ll see.
‘You never know what can happen in a football season.’
Upamecano has also been heavily linked with a possible move to Barcelona this summer and the centre-half admits he would love to join forces with childhood friend Ousmane Dembele at some stage in his career.
He added: ‘Would I like to play with Ousmane Dembele again? I would like that, why not?!
‘Ousmane is a very good player and we have grown up together.
‘So of course I would like to play with him one day.’
Donny van de Beek remains United’s sole new addition with less than a fortnight remaining of the summer transfer window but the Red Devils are determined to strengthen at left-back before the deadline.
Alex Telles is looking to push through a switch to Old Trafford but United risk missing out on the Brazil international as they attempt to haggle a lower fee with Porto.
It’s understood Porto would be willing to part with the full-back for £23m.
