The Red Devils signed Uruguayan legend Cavani on transfer deadline day following his exit from PSG at the end of last season.
Cavani scored 200 goals in 301 appearances for the French champions but some have questioned how much of an impact he will have at Manchester United at the age of 33.
Former United striker Forlan is adamant Cavani will develop into a valuable member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad, however, and says he can emulate Ibrahimovic.
Similar questions were asked of Ibrahimovic when he arrived at Old Trafford in 2016 but the Swedish hero scored 28 goals in his first season in England to help United win the Europa League and EFL Cup.
‘Edinson is still a great player,’ Forlan told the South China Morning Post. ‘I’ve not seen any decline in him yet.
‘I think he’s a top signing for United, just like Zlatan was. He’s that type of player.
‘He’ll lead by example, by how he trains and how he plays. He’ll be a positive influence for the young players.
‘He’s a winner who has won lots of trophies, a goalscorer who has scored wherever he has been, he assists too.
‘He’s strong and his physique will be fine for English football. He’s quick, he’s highly motivated.’
