Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been keen to add quality to his options in the middle of the park ahead of the new season and Red Devils have reportedly agreed a £40.3million deal with Ajax for Van de Beek’s signature.
United were initially looking to land the 23-year-old back in the January transfer window but Ajax made it clear they had no intention of selling one of their key players midway through the 2019/20 campaign.
The Premier League giants are now expected to finalise a summer move for Van de Beek and former Netherlands star Van der Vaart is delighted for his fellow countryman.
‘Donny deserves this transfer so much. He has played excellently for Ajax,’ the ex-Ajax and Tottenham midfielder told Dutch outlet NOS.
‘And Manchester United really need this kind of player in their team.
‘This transfer is fantastic for us [Dutch people] too. We are all going to follow him now.
‘This move is so deserved.’
Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag fuelled speculation that Van de Beek was set to leave the club imminently after their clash with Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend.
Van de Beek played no part part in the pre-season friendly and Ten Hag confirmed that injury was not the reason for the midfielder’s absence.
‘The request not to let him play did not come specifically from one side. We do that together.
‘Agreements have been made about a possible transfer, and if that possibility arises, you must also co-operate.’
