Donny van de Beek says he’s ‘relieved’ to have finally put an end to the uncertainty surrounding his future and has a ‘good feeling’ after his first conversation with Manchester United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 23-year-old midfielder became Solskjaer’s first signing of the summer transfer window earlier this week after the Red Devils wrapped up a £40million agreement with Ajax for his signature.

After undergoing a medical in his home country, Van de Beek came on as a second-half substitute on Friday evening as the Netherlands got the better of Poland in the Nations League.

Tottenham’s Steven Bergwijn stole the headlines with the only goal of the game just past the hour-mark in Amsterdam but it was Van de Beek who faced the media shortly after the final whistle.

Asked about his move to Old Trafford in the week, he admitted: ‘It was very messy this week and quite exciting.

‘Before the international period it began to pick up, the clubs were in talks. Then the clubs were out, but the medical still had to be done, and some other things.

‘Ultimately, I am very happy that it is now ready and that we can play football again, because this is quite messy for a player.’

Van de Beek is confident Solskjaer understands the ‘qualities’ he can bring to United after talking to the Norwegian for the first time this week.

‘I am very relieved,’ he continued.

‘I have had many congratulations and sweet messages.

‘Many great Dutch players have of course played football at Manchester United and I have seen the team play many times over the past season.

‘I had a good conversation with the manager which gave me a good feeling.

‘He knew very well what my qualities were and thinks that I can be an important player for the team, that I can give them something extra. I hope it works out.’

Van de Beek has taken the No.34 shirt at United in tribute to former Ajax team-mate and close pal Abdelhak Nouri, who was in a coma for nearly three years after collapsing in a friendly back in 2017.

On the significance of the number, the Dutchman explained: ‘I have thought about that for a long time because it brings something emotional with it.

‘But it’s super nice: I like it for myself and the family is also happy with it.

‘I hope that I can celebrate many goals, assists and trophies with that number.’
