Edinson Cavani has congratulated compatriot Facundo Pellistri on his transfer to Manchester United after the two Uruguayans both agreed moves to Old Trafford on deadline day.
Despite spending much of the summer chasing a right winger – namely Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho – United changed tack late in the window, swooping in to sign frontman and free agent Cavani.
The Red Devils also added an injection of young talent, signing Pellistri from Club Atletico Penarol and fellow teenager Amad Diallo from Atalanta, while established left-back Alex Telles arrived from Porto on a busy day.
Pellistri, who was recommended by Diego Forlan, will initially link up with the youth team but there are hopes he can compete for a place in the first team sooner rather than later.
Cavani could prove key in his integration to life in England, with the 33-year-old set to take his young countryman under his wing and congratulating him on the move to United.
‘Congratulations Facu,’ wrote the former Napoli and PSG striker on Instagram. ‘Safe travels and we’ll be waiting here to accompany you.’
The 18-year-old replied in kind to Cavani, writing: ‘Thank you very much Edi! You are a crack [great player]. Let’s go!’
Pellistri has a growing reputation in Uruguay, having featured 37 times for Penarol in the Primera Division last season, and he is delighted to have made the move to Old Trafford.
‘To join a club with the history of Manchester United is a dream come true,’ he told United’s official website.
‘I am coming into a squad full of great players who I will learn from every day. Everyone knows that Manchester United is a club that gives young players an opportunity and I am ready to work hard every day to earn those chances and prove myself in England.’
