Edinson Cavani is set to join Atletico Madrid, not Manchester United, claims his former manager at Uruguayan side Danubio,
Cavani has left Paris Saint-Germain after seven years in Ligue 1, which saw him score 200 goals in 301 games for the French side.
There have been no shortage of suitors for the 33-year-old, who has scored 50 goals for Uruguay, with United touted as a possible destination for the striker.
However, according to Daniel Zicari, Cavani is on his way to Spain where he will join up with his international teammate Luis Suarez, who signed for Atleti from Barcelona this summer.
‘Here we take it for granted that Cavani will be a new Atleti player,’ Zicari told AS.
‘It was a shame that it did not materialise in January. It would be very emotional for him to end up with Suarez. They are both from the same city.’
Suarez, also 33, is indeed from the same city as Cavani, Salto, and has made an excellent start to life in Madrid.
Zicari expects Cavani to be a success in Madrid as well, playing alongside Suarez under Diego Simeone.
‘He is a great player and Atletico, a great club,’ he said. ‘If he plays as a team, I think he can exceed 20 goals. He is a decisive footballer with a high percentage of goals and chances.
‘In addition to contributing many goals, he also has a great way of playing, position on the pitch, he is very positive, he is very supportive in the game.’
