Edu has called for Arsenal flop Willian to be given ‘a little bit of time’ and still believes he will come good.
Willian left Chelsea for the Emirates this summer but has struggled to find his best form in an Arsenal shirt.
He provided two assists in his first Premier League game for his new side against Fulham but has yet to find the net in 15 appearances in all competitions.
With Arsenal languishing in 15th in the Premier League – just five points above the relegation zone – Mikel Arteta needs the Brazil international, 32, to find his best form quickly to help turn their fortunes around.
Edu, the club’s technical director, remains confident he will do exactly that.
He believes Willian is still adapting to his new surroundings and praised the attacker for his dedicated attitude.
‘Listen, everybody knows Willian,’ said Edu. ‘If people say that he’s not a good footballer then maybe they don’t know football because he has always performed at the top, top level. Then he moved.
‘For me, Willian is a question of time to be performing how we know he can.
‘What do you expect? Do you expect it straight away? Boom! Willian can be the best one? But he needs a little bit of time, it’s strange as well to say that but you need time to know the players who you are going to play with.
‘Sometimes you receive the ball in positions, sometimes in other positions, Mikel wants to play forwards, the other one wants to play to the side, there’s a little bit of adaptation.
‘That’s happening with Willian.
‘Training, he’s training properly. His behaviour? Top, as always. Training? Fantastic. For me, it’s just a question of timing.’
