Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has revealed he wants to play Timo Werner in a central position at Stamford Bridge.

The German has had a difficult start to life in west London since a £49million move from RB Leipzig last summer.

Though Werner has mainly been deployed from the left for Chelsea, he was given a central role as the Blues were comprehensively beaten 3-1 by Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Though Werner was no means to blame for the defeat, the German failed to take his opportunity to prove he can lead the line for the club.

Nevertheless, Lampard says he prefers to play Werner centrally and says the German agrees with him.

‘Timo has played on the side because we’ve had to at times because of the injuries around it [the frontline],’ said Lampard.

‘Timo likes to be more central and I like him more central as well, today you can see that.

‘Hakim has just come back from injury, it’s not a game to judge him on today.

‘But the quality he’s played at means he comes back in and there were some moments I thought he was good as well and he’ll get better very quickly.’

Sunday’s game was the first time that Werner played in a front three alongside Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech.

The pair were due to start against Burnley in December but Pulisic pulled up in the warm-up.

Lampard admits he wants to give the trio more game time together but the likes of Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud still have a part to play.

‘As a threesome [Pulisic, Werner and Ziyech], yes, I like that but also Tammy and Oli have given us a lot this season as well,’ continued Lampard.

‘We do need goals at the top end of the pitch, we need to get back to that. There’s been a nice spread of goals this season but at the same time if we’re going to get where we want to be we need numbers. There’s been some good performances there but we do need numbers.’
