Silva, 36, has had a mixed start to the campaign after completing a free transfer to Chelsea in the summer but started at the heart of Frank Lampard’s defence alongside Kurt Zouma last night.
Edouard Mendy produced the moment of the evening with an excellent save to deny Nemanja Gudelj early on at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea’s defence will be pleased to emerge from the Group E match with a clean sheet.
The sight of Silva in some discomfort after an awkward fall in the second half would have had Lampard sweating – but the Brazilian went on to complete 90 minutes in west London and Chelsea’s manager allayed fears over his fitness.
‘He has not flagged it, so I think we are okay,’ Lampard said.
‘I thought Thiago showed the things I have spoken about, his experiences and qualities.
‘Mendy had one good save to make and he made it, and was good with his feet.
‘Against a very good team it was a very organised defensive performance. I am very pleased.’
Lampard believes Chelsea’s players will be buoyed by the performance but said there was still plenty of room for improvement ahead of their trip to Manchester United in the Premier League this weekend.
‘To get through the game will give us good confidence,’ he added.
‘We are going to get better.
‘The more we do that then we will get better naturally.’
