Frank Lampard says Thiago Silva’s debut for Chelsea was ‘exciting’ and that the Brazilian will only improve as the season goes on.
The former Paris Saint-Germain captain made his full debut as Chelsea put six past League One side Barnsley at Stamford Bridge to progress to the fourth round of the EFL Cup, where they’ll face either Tottenham or Leyton Orient.
The 35-year-old has waited patiently to make his first appearance for the club and was ruled out of the first two fixtures of the season on account of his lack of match fitness, rather than any underlying issue.
The Brazilian adds experience and knowledge to Chelsea’s leaky defence but many have questioned whether the veteran has the legs to compete in the Premier League, given his age and lack of familiarity with the competition.
Though Chelsea were hardly run ragged by Barnsley, the Yorkshire side put up a good fight in the first half and Silva was tested on plenty of occasions.
‘It’s exciting for us,’ said Lampard.
‘He has just had a week’s training with us. But he gave something off for us with his leadership and authority.
‘At the minute, the fact he can’t speak the language doesn’t matter too much.’
Silva could be in line to feature given Andreas Christensen is suspsneded following his red card against the Reds.
Lampard will be buoyed by the performance of Kai Havertz, as the German got off the mark for the club by bagging a hat-trick in the win in west London.
Tammy Abraham, Ross Barkley and Olivier Giroud added the other three goals.
