Frank Lampard hailed the professional response from Jorginho as Timo Werner took his role as Chelsea’s penalty-taker and scored twice from the spot in the Champions League win over Rennes on Wednesday night.
The Blues comfortably beat the Ligue 1 side 3-0, thanks to the two penalties from Werner and a strike from Tammy Abraham at Stamford Bridge.
Jorginho has been the penalty-taker for Chelsea since arriving in 2018 but after two recent misses from 12 yards, Lampard has handed responsibility to Werner.
The Chelsea boss said it was a seamless process to switch takers and praised the Italy international for being so respectful about it.
‘Not an easy decision because Jorginho has been pretty faultless for us. It’s hard from me,’ said Lampard.
‘He’s missed two recently, Timo came in and scored one in our last game.
‘I had a conversation with Jorginho and his answer was perfect from a professional, he doesn’t care who takes them he just wants to score, that’s how he approaches it.
‘Timo takes them tonight, Timo is the taker at the moment and he took them very emphatically, so I’m happy.’
‘Before the game the manager told me that I should take penalties today,’ he explained on BT Sport. ‘Two today is a little bit crazy.
‘Good goals for a striker and I hope I can go on like this scoring and penalty-taking.
‘When you want to score 20 or more goals you have to take a few penalties in the season.
‘I’m happy about that, I’m happy Jorgi is cool with that.
‘It’s a point that speaks for our team, we are not selfish and want to go in one direction.’
The 24-year-old is well on his way to that 20-goal mark as he took his tally to 7 in 11 games in all competitions for Chelsea so far.
