The England international was heavily criticised for his display in the club’s 3-1 win against Brighton last weekend and he was replaced by Mateo Kovacic in the starting XI for the visit of Liverpool.
Antonio Rudiger was also removed from the squad, raising question marks over his future at the club.
Lampard was asked about both players before kick-off but he failed to explain the German’s omission, focusing instead on his decision to drop Loftus-Cheek.
‘It’s a change – a change from my point of view,’ said Lampard.
‘I think different games bring different problems. We’re playing the best team in the league by a way last year.
‘I think with Kovacic he brings you a presence in midfield. We want to play, we want to get on the ball. Against Brighton it was tough for us to do that for different reasons but I think early season being the biggest reason and where we’re at. Hopefully today we can get more ball there.’
Chelsea have made six signings so far this summer but the other arrivals, such as Ben Chilwell and Hakim Ziyech, are currently unavailable with injuries.
