Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale is open to a loan move to Manchester United this summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer targets an alternative to Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.

The 20-year-old England winger has been United’s priority target throughout the transfer window but the Red Devils have failed to convince Dortmund to lower their £108m asking price.

With just three weeks left of the transfer window, United have little time left to convince Dortmund to part with the former Manchester City star and that’s led Solskjaer to review alternative options.

Douglas Costa and Ivan Perisic have both been linked with a move but Bale is believed to be United’s leading target if they cannot convince Dortmund to sell Sancho.

United have tried to sign Bale on at least three occasions in the last decade but he opted to sign for Madrid when he left Tottenham in 2013 and he twice rejected a move to Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.

However, the Welshman is surplus to requirements under Zinedine Zidane and the club are desperate to get his £600,000-a-week wages off the books.

Bale was keen to stay at the club last year but with two years left on his deal this summer, he’s now accepted that his future lies away from the Bernabeu.

According to the Times, he’s open to joining United on a season-long loan deal as he’s keen on a return to the Premier League.

United would want Madrid to cover at least half of Bale’s wages but the 31-year-old would be keen on a move to Old Trafford if Madrid agree to it.

United’s hopes of signing Sancho appear to be fading with Dortmund coach Lucien Favre insisted today that he’s planning on keeping the winger.

‘We need him, no question,’ said Favre.

‘Everyone was happy that he stayed. We don’t need to talk long about his qualities — they are enormous. He scores and sets up a lot of goals and can often make all the difference.

‘There are a few details that Sancho needs to improve. That’s normal for a 20-year-old.’
