Gary Neville and Patrice Evra both compared Mason Greenwood to Robin van Persie and claimed the youngster was the ‘best finisher’ at Manchester United after his stunning goal in the side’s 3-1 win over West Ham on Saturday.
Greenwood, making his fifth start of the Premier League campaign, turned brilliantly and fired past Lukasz Fabianski to put United in front for the first time at the London Stadium, just three minutes after Paul Pogba had cancelled out Tomas Soucek’s opener.
Marcus Rashford extended the Red Devils’ advantage in the 78th minute and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side kept hold of their two-goal lead to come away from the capital with all three points and move up to fourth in the table.
Reacting to Greenwood’s 68th-minute strike, ex-United right-back Neville said on Sky Sports: ‘The individuals like Pogba and Greenwood – they’ve got star quality.
‘Good from Fernandes, then [Alex] Telles plays it in. He’s the best finisher in the club, Mason Greenwood. That is class.
‘The first touch, I always say every time I watch him I feel it’s Robin van Persie. The power on the strike is what beats the goalkeeper.
‘I think he’s the best footballer out of all of them. He’s young, he has so much potential, it’s untrue.’
Evra was also reminded of his former team-mate Van Persie when watching back Greenwood’s exquisite effort in the second half.
‘This reminds me of Van Persie,’ the ex-United and France full-back said in the Sky Sports studio.
‘I remember sometimes I gave some crappy crosses and he made them look beautiful. That’s what Greenwood did.
‘He’s the best finisher in the club.’
Solskjaer’s men must secure a point in Germany to book their place in the knockout stage of the competition.
