The Dutch centre-back is not expected to play again this season after tearing his ACL in a shocking challenge from Pickford which was not punished either by referee Michael Oliver or VAR.
Later in the game, Liverpool were dealt another injury blow in the 2-2 draw when Thiago was wiped out by Richarlison’s studs-up challenge, though the Brazilian was shown a red card.
Now Wijnaldum has strongly condemned both Pickford’s ‘completely stupid’ challenge and Everton’s whole mindset, which he – and the rest of the Liverpool players – felt went over the top.
‘Yeah of course we are upset. What I just explained, the way Pickford went in in the challenge was completely, in my opinion, stupid,’ said Wijnaldum on Tuesday.
‘I believe that he didn’t want to injure Virgil the way he injured him, but the way he took the tackle he basically did not care about what happened after the tackle.
‘We know it’s a derby and everyone wants to win the derby, and sometimes you go a little bit over the top, but this was too much.
‘And it was not only his tackle, we talk about the tackle from Richarlison on Thiago, that was also a nasty one. So that’s what bothered me the most, and most of the other players.
‘Accidents can always happen in football, you can be unlucky with the tackle and injure someone, but the way they were doing it is completely unacceptable.
‘And it makes it harder that they don’t get punished. In this case, Pickford didn’t get punished after seeing the videos.’
