Robin van Persie has backed Edinson Cavani to be a ‘brilliant signing’ for Manchester United and joked he played a part in the transfer after talking up a move for the ‘goal machine’ striker back in February.
The Red Devils missed out on their number one target, Jadon Sancho, this summer and stepped up their interest in Cavani as they were forced to look elsewhere for attacking reinforcements towards the end of the transfer window.
The 33-year-old was available on a free transfer after his contract expired at Paris Saint-Germain at the end of June and put pen to paper on a one-year deal at Old Trafford on deadline day.
He was one of five players to join United this summer, with Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles, Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri also completing moves to the Theatre of Dreams.
Former United star Van Persie hailed Cavani’s arrival and predicted the Uruguay international would have a positive effect on the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.
‘Agent RVP. Glad to see you were listening, Manchester United!’ the iconic Dutchman joked on Twitter.
‘Brilliant signing and adds plenty of experience.
‘Will improve players around him even more #Martial, #Rashford #Greenwood #GoalMachine.’
United legend Rio Ferdinand also claimed to have played a minor role in Cavani’s switch and said the veteran forward was an ‘excellent’ addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team squad.
‘It’s mad because I reached out to Cavani on social media in January,’ he said on his FIVE YouTube channel.
‘I used to do it as player. I would get hold of players and ask, “would you come to Manchester United?” Because I’m a fan! I message players all the time.
‘Listen, Cavani was flattered that someone connected to the club was saying that. I thought he would jump at the chance [to join] and that’s what has happened.’
‘I highlighted Cavani as a player to buy during the last transfer window because we’ve got three supremely talented young strikers who need help.
‘They’re going to need assistance. Martial is a prime example because he’s going to be suspended now (after his red card against Tottenham) and we need someone to step in.
‘The way Cavani plays, the way he applies himself, the way he trains, his experience, what he could teach the likes of Mason Greenwood.
‘He’s scored so many goals and won multiple trophies. For Greenwood to watch him on a daily basis, he will benefit the most.
‘If Cavani can have that affect with this group of players then it’s worthwhile.
‘Listen, he’s a top player. Experienced, gets goals, he’s someone who will be good value for the club.’
