The former Liverpool and Chelsea defender has been unimpressed by the manner in which the players have found form quickly under Tuchel, after failing to perform in Frank Lampard’s final months in charge.
Johnson, who played with Lampard for England, feels as if Lampard could have produced the same results as his German replacement, had the players been giving their all.
Tuchel is unbeaten since arriving at Stamford Bridge at the end of January and has guided his new side back into the coveted top-four spots.
They are now just four points behind second-placed Manchester United and are on the verge of the quarter-finals of the Champions League as they lead Atletico Madrid 1-0 heading into the second leg of their last-16 clash next week.
Johnson has been impressed by the former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain manager’s impact on the club but still questions why the players weren’t performing in this manner under his predecessor.
And he believes it’s a ‘problem’ for the players that they can pick and choose when they turn up.
‘When Tuchel first came in, Chelsea were beating teams that they should have been beating, but now they’ve shown they can beat Tottenham, Everton and got a good result against Manchester United,’ Johnson told CheltenhamGuides.com.
‘So the players have to look at themselves. But that said, right now the appointment looks good because they’re absolutely flying.’
