Glen Johnson says Liverpool must do everything they can to keep Georginio Wijnaldum at Anfield with his contract set to expire next summer.
Ronald Koeman confirmed Wijnaldum was on his list of targets in the last transfer window and could reignite his interest in January.
And ex-Liverpool right-back Johnson feels his former side must hang onto the 29-year-old as his versatility and experience makes him difficult to replace.
‘I think they need to keep him,’ Johnson told Compare.bet.
‘I think he’s a fantastic footballer, he’s one of those all-round midfielders, great on the ball, not an out-and-out goalscorer, and not an out-and-out defender.
‘So, he’s one of those utility men in midfield who can play in any one of the three positions.
‘And I think he’s a fantastic squad player and obviously, the experience he’s gained in the last few years is hard to replace.’
‘It depends on who you’re playing and what sort of formation you’re playing,’ he added. ‘But if I had to pick a three in a diamond, I’d probably go Hendo [Henderson], Thiago and Fabinho.’
