Paul Merson has lavished praise on Diogo Jota, who he feels ‘fits like a glove’ in Liverpool’s attacking line.
The Reds completed a £45million deal to sign the Portugal international from Wolves in September and he has hit the ground running.
And Arsenal legend Merson hailed Jota’s clever runs off the ball and goalscoring ability, which have helped him settle in quickly at Liverpool.
‘Assuming Salah comes back quickly from his positive Covid test, those four together could be frightening over the next few months.
‘With Jota it’s quite simple. He gives you goals. There’s an art in making runs without the ball and he’s so good at it.
‘He fits like a glove at Liverpool. They all make runs like they KNOW they are going to get the ball. They run at full pelt and it opens up space.’
‘I still think they are the team to beat, even with all these injuries,’ Merson added. ‘If you finish above Liverpool and don’t win the league this season, you’re bang out of luck.
‘I think it’s a good option and I think it’s what they will do – because it takes the heat off their defence without Gomez and Van Dijk.
‘It’s a way of playing on the front foot, which is Klopp’s way, and a way of letting other teams worry about them.
‘If they go the other way and start being negative because they know they’re missing key players at the back, I see them struggling.
‘They won’t be shutting up shop. They went to the home of one of the best teams in the country, without Van Dijk, and played a front four.’
