The Argentine looks set to leave the Catalan club after almost two decades having handed in a transfer request last week.
A transfer away from Barca looks difficult with both the club and La Liga insisting any interested suitors will have to pay his astronomical £632million release clause.
Messi’s exorbitant wages are another issue, which only the likes of Man City and Paris Saint-Germain would be able to afford.
The 33-year-old would be reunited with his former boss Pep Guardiola, and City full-back Cancelo can see Messi slotting in the side to a great degree of success.
‘He’s a great player, I won’t say that he’s not,’ the Portugal international told RTP.
‘In a team like Manchester City, of course, also with great players on his side, he’d have a great season.’
‘At Man City we have not talked about Messi coming, but everyone would like to have Messi in their team,’ the former Barcelona academy player said earlier this week.
‘On the Messi issue, it’s something between clubs that I can’t get into.
‘I am going to avoid the question if he would be a good signing for City because he is a Barca player and I’m not going to comment on it.’
