Chuba Akpom has expressed his disappointment and confusion over not receiving a call-up to Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
The 29-year-old striker, who has been linked with a move away from Ajax, has been open about his desire to represent Nigeria.
However, he has yet to make an appearance for the Super Eagles.
“I was never approached when I was young to play for Nigeria,” Akpom explained.
“So, when you are already in the England system, that’s all you know.”
Akpom revealed that he has been waiting for a call-up since 2019 and is starting to lose hope.
“I’ve been waiting since 2019,” he said, visibly emotional. “I switched allegiance long ago, but if it happens, it happens; if not, I just keep working hard.”
Despite his frustration, Akpom remains committed to Nigeria and is puzzled by the lack of opportunities.
“I don’t have a clue why I haven’t been called up. Maybe there are a lot of good strikers,” he speculated.
Akpom’s performance has performed admirably for Ajax this season, despite his reduced role, scoring 8 goals and providing 2 assists.
He has been one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers over the past four seasons and will be hoping new boss Eric Chelle finally extends an invitation.
