Liverpool new boy Thiago Alcantara has sent a get-well-soon message to Virgil van Dijk after it was confirmed that the defender would be out for several months with an ACL tear.
Van Dijk hobbled off the pitch following a horror challenge from Jordan Pickford in Saturday’s Merseyside derby and the Dutchman must undergo surgery on his knee, meaning Jurgen Klopp is left with Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Fabinho as his options at centre-back.
The Netherlands international vowed to return stronger than ever in a defiant Instagram message on Sunday evening and messages of support have flooded in from fans and players, including team-mate and captain Jordan Henderson.
And summer signing Thiago, who also suffered a knee injury – fortunately less serious than Van Dijk’s – at Goodison Park, has passed on his best wishes to Liverpool’s talismanic centre-half.
‘Get well soon, bro!’ Thiago, who managed to stay on for the entire 90 minutes, said in response to Van Dijk’s message.
He later tweeted: ‘It’s all about teamwork.’
According to The Liverpool Echo, tests on Thiago’s knee at Mossley Hill’s Spire Hospital have determined that the injury is not severe.
But the Spaniard – who completed a £20million move from Bayern Munich last month – will likely miss Liverpool’s Champions League opener with Ajax on Wednesday evening.
‘We will see if it’s true or not, but if he felt like this then we need to have a look.’
