Ozil hasn’t played for the club since March but he is the Gunners’ top earner on £350,000-a-week and that’s a sizeable dent in the club’s coffers during a financially-difficult period.
Many felt Arteta was freezing Ozil out in an attempt to get him off the books but Wilshere says there are reasons behind the decision that are not evident to the public.
Speaking to the ITV Football podcast, Wilshere was asked if he was surprised by Arsenal’s decision to outcast Ozil.
‘Yeah I am, because I played with him and used to love playing with him and really, really enjoyed it. He’s one of the best I played with,’ said Wilshere.
‘So yeah, I am surprised, but there’s obviously something that we don’t know.’
The former England international admits he’d love to return to the Emirates but admits a move is unlikely.
‘I’m not stupid to know that there’s probably no chance of it happening but I’m an Arsenal man, I love the club and want to see the club do well,’ said Wilshere.
