Jamie Carragher has branded the clamour for Liverpool to sign Thiago Alcantara as disrespectful to Jurgen Klopp’s current midfielders.
The Premier League champions got their title defence off to a winning start on Saturday, edging a seven-goal thriller against newly promoted Leeds after Mohamed Salah comleted his hat-trick with a decisive late penalty.
Klopp as been reluctant to spend so far this summer with only Konstantinos Tsimikas added to the squad which swept all before them on the domestic front last season.
Liverpool have been incessantly linked with a move for Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara but Klopp is unlikely to sign the Spain international, unless one of his midfield stalwarts departs.
Georginio Wijnaldum looks the most likely Liverpool midfielder to leave with Ronald Koeman keen to bring his compatriot, who has one year left on his contract, to Camp Nou.
The former Newcastle star, along with club captain Jordan Henderson and the evergreen James Milner have been central to Liverpool’s recent success and although Carragher believes several squad members will move on in what remains of the transfer window, Klopp’s most loyal foot soldiers deserve more respect.
He said: ‘Liverpool have got three or four players in the squad they are looking to move on.
‘Thiago would give Liverpool’s midfield something different, no doubt. I think the huge clamour for Thaigo is a little bit disrespectful to Liverpool’s current midfield three.
‘Yes he would add something different. But if he doesn’t come in, it’s not the end of the world, this is still a fantastic midfield for Liverpool.’
