Liverpool legend John Barnes reckons the Reds should be looking to strengthen their midfield, with Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and Brighton’s Yves Bissouma ideal transfer targets.
The Reds do not look likely to be busy in the transfer market during January, despite missing Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita due to the Africa Cup of Nations and the general problems of illness and injury at this time of the year.
Barnes does not expect his former club to make a statement signing this month, but does feel they should look to bring in one of both of the central midfielders in the summer.
The former England winger believes both Bellingham and Bissouma would suit Liverpool’s high energy style and they may also be players that other elite clubs wouldn’t consider.
‘Jude Bellingham would be a great acquisition for Liverpool, but I can’t see him coming in January, if at all,’ said Barnes, speaking to BonusCodeBets.
‘Yves Bissouma, at Brighton, also fits the profile for one of Liverpool’s three midfielders. Those are two players that Liverpool should be looking at, but I can’t see either of them are going to happen in January, they’re ones for the future.

‘If we look at Manchester City, they will want a completely different type of player; someone who’s comfortable on the ball and who has a different profile. But for Liverpool, they want hard working midfielders who have a good work rate, high energy, a willingness to get up and down the pitch, and don’t dribble too much.
‘Bellingham and Bissouma are two players that would suit Liverpool whereas other clubs might look at other options.’
The Reds seem unlikely to do any business before the end of the month, especially with a number of players nearing a return from absence.
Harvey Elliott, Thiago Alcantara and Divock Origi are all expected back early next month, while Nat Phillips will be available again earlier than that.
When Salah, Mane and Keita return from AFCON obviously depends on results in the tournament, but the final is on 6 February, so even in a worst case scenario, they may only miss two Premier League games, against Brentford on 16 January and at Crystal Palace on 23 January.
