Jose Mourinho has fired a dig at Liverpool on the anniversary of Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip against Chelsea.

Demba Ba capitalised on Gerrard’s mistake to help secure victory for Mourinho’s Chelsea at Anfield, which all but ended Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes in 2014.

During the match, Mourinho also clashed with Gerrard as he refused to give the ball back to the Liverpool captain in the Chelsea dugout.

And on Tuesday, Mourinho made light of Chelsea’s game plan to ensure Liverpool lost out on the title.

Posting on Instagram, Mourinho used a picture of himself keeping the ball from Gerrard along with the caption: ‘Anfield, April 27th 2014. Ball possession.’

Ironically, Mourinho’s side registered just 27 possession in their win over Liverpool in that game.

Speaking about his slip, Gerrard admitted in 2019 that the incident still played on his mind.

‘This wound has been open since that experience,’ Gerrard said.

‘I’m not sure it will close because I can’t change that experience. It doesn’t affect how I feel towards what I’m looking in on now.

‘I don’t drive myself crazy over it. At the same time, it was such a big year. It was the trophy that eluded me. I’m always going to look back and wish it was different.

‘I think about it most days. A Liverpool team winning the league would help how I feel for sure.

‘When I analyse it properly I understand it wasn’t just that moment [the slip] but still part of my head thinks it is.

‘People say to me, to make me feel better, it was over 38 games.

‘But I still know, behind what you’re saying to me, that moment was so big.’
