The 31-year-old is closing in on a return to Spurs, who are negotiating with Real Madrid over a season-long loan deal and how the forward’s £600,000-a-week salary will be financed.
Mourinho was desperate to sign Bale during his time as Manchester United manager and even told the forward before a pre-season friendly against Madrid in 2017: ‘I cannot buy you because you don’t talk’.
ESPN report that Mourinho is fully behind Tottenham’s push to sign Bale before the end of the window.
But the report also claims that Mourinho has spoken to insiders at Madrid to get a better understanding of Bale’s situation and was told to ‘proceed with caution’.
Mourinho is also keen for Spurs to recruit a new striker to ease the burden on Harry Kane but the arrival of Bale will significantly bolster his options in attack.
Bale has drastically fallen out of favour with Zinedine Zidane and made just 20 appearances for Madrid in all competitions last season.
The Spanish club are now desperate to offload Bale before the window closes on October 5 and are not even looking for a loan fee from Spurs.
Manchester United are also targeting Bale as an alternative to Jadon Sancho.
‘Gareth still loves Spurs,’ Barnett told BBC Sport Wales. ‘We are talking. It’s where he wants to be.’
Speaking to AFP on Wednesday morning, Barnett added: ‘It’s close but not done. It’s a complicated deal.’
