The 26-year-old goalkeeper has failed to live up to expectations following his world-record £71million move from Athletic Bilbao to Stamford Bridge back in 2018 and lost his place to Willy Cabellero towards the end of last season.
A pair of costly mistakes in Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool last month did little to help Kepa’s cause and Frank Lampard instructed the club to bring in a replacement before the transfer deadline after running out of patience with the Spaniard.
Mendy was signed from Rennes at the end of September for a fee of around £22m and the Senegal international has started the Blues’ last two matches against Tottenham and Crystal Palace.
Asked about his future while on international duty with Spain, Kepa responded: ‘I feel good, strong and confident.
‘Maybe it’s not the dream situation, but sometimes these things happen. I am confident I will turn my form around.
‘I do not have the feeling of being a substitute. We have three goalkeepers and the level is very high.
‘He (Lampard) is the coach who chooses the eleven and we have to try to do our best and if we do not play we must try as much as possible.’
The shot-stopper added: ‘In the life of the footballer there are ups and downs.
‘My situation is not the same as last year. I only have to work and show my qualities.
‘If I have the opportunity to play I will try to take advantage of it.’
Frank Lampard has been impressed with Mendy’s start in Chelsea colours and insists he has no concerns about the fact the ‘keeper has been communicating with his defenders in French.
‘I don’t know about Ben learning it, it’s been a long time since I learned French at school,’ the Chelsea boss said after the side’s win over Palace.
‘I think it’s a position we’re in at the moment. Edou speaks good English as well to be fair.
‘I think it makes sense obviously with Kurt [Zouma] and Thiago [Silva] in front of him that he can speak French, [Cesar] Azpi does as well. I think we’ll get there very quickly with that.
‘We’re bringing new players into the team, the back five is where you want to be solid, you want to see if it settles very quickly and today it looked good.’
