Boateng’s contract with the Bundesliga champions is due to expire at the end of the season and Sport Bild claim he will not be offered a new deal.
The German outlet say that the 32-year-old was on the Gunners’ shortlist last summer and they are still monitoring his situation.
With Daviz Luiz’s contract also due to expire in June 2021, former Gunners striker Campbell believes veteran defender Boateng could potentially step into the Brazilian’s role of helping younger players at the club develop.
‘You can never have enough quality and you can never have enough players who have done it at the top level,’ Campbell told Football Insider.
‘Looking to maybe recruit someone like Jerome Boateng shows where the club is at.
‘Gabriel and [William] Saliba would benefit from having somebody like Boateng at the club.
‘I am not sure how long David Luiz will be at the club so Jerome Boateng could be that experienced player who helps others fulfil their potential.
‘Arsenal need characters. They need strong characters who have been there and done it at the top level. Jerome Boateng is certainly one.
‘But beggars cannot be choosers and we need experience. He is a serial winner.’
