Real Sociedad pulled off a stunning 1-0 win over Barcelona at the Reale Arena, ending the leaders’ seven-game winning streak.
Barca suffered a setback before kickoff as it was confirmed that teenage superstar Lamine Yamal was missing from manager Hansi Flick’s squad after picking up an injury.
Flick’s men started the game on the front foot and thought they’d taken an early lead through Robert Lewandowski, but his goal was controversially ruled out for offside; a decision that will no doubt be a major talking point.
Sociedad grew into the game after that, clearly buoyed by the home support, and eventually took the lead through Sheraldo Becker’s clinical finish in the 33rd minute.
The hosts had chances to double their lead, but Mikel Oyarzabal fired wide and Ander Barrenetxea’s scuffed strike went narrowly past the post.
Barcelona pushed for an equalizer but couldn’t break through, with Raphinha and Olmo trying to force the issue to no avail.
In the end, Sociedad held on for a famous win as the Blaugrana suffered their first defeat in eight matches.
Sociedad’s victory moves them into the top half of LaLiga, just two points shy of the European places.
