First half goals from Darwin Nuñez and Harvey Elliot were enough for Liverpool to see off Southampton on Wednesday night as they booked their place in the semifinals of the Carabao Cup.
Liverpool, unsurprisingly, were dominating possession and the hosts were unable to break forward with most of the football played in Southampton’s half.
They were rewarded in the 24th minute when a long ball from Alexander-Arnold took a deflection and fell kindly for Nuñez who slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to give the visitors the lead.
Harvey Elliot doubled the lead in the 32nd minute after he set up nicely after some good work by Cody Gakpo and Wataru Endo. This gave Liverpool firm control at the break.
Southampton started the second half brilliantly and halved the deficit when the ball ricocheted off Endo and into the path of Cameron Archer who curled past Kelleher.
The hosts were unable to find the equaliser despite plenty of late pressure as Liverpool ensured they advanced to semifinals of the competition.
