New Barca boss Ronald Koeman has made it clear to Suarez he does not see him as a first-team regular, with the Dutchman looking to usher in fresh blood and keen to bring in compatriot Memphis Depay from Lyon.
But Suarez is one of the highest-paid players at Camp Nou, earning around £400,000-a-week, so Barca are looking to ship his enormous salary off their wage bill if he will not be playing.
The Uruguayan had been heavily linked with a move to Juventus, even flying to Italy to get an Italian passport, but his preference has been to remain in Spain and that now looks increasingly likely.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Suarez has now reached an agreement on personal terms with Atletico and is very keen to work with Diego Simeone.
The 33-year-old has been offered a two-year contract while he has been in constant contact with Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin and Simeone, which has convinced him that they believe in him.
However, there are still some stumbling blocks to overcome: on Suarez’s side, he believes Barca should pay him the final year of his contract, which runs out in the summer of 2021.
But Barcelona are unwilling to do so and a compromise needs to be reached, with the Catalan club previously suggesting to Juve that they pay out Suarez’s final year with a transfer fee being waived.
Atletico also have a stumbling block of their own to traverse, with the club needing to sell Diego Costa first before they can afford to bring in Suarez.
While Koeman is willing to reintegrate the striker into the Barcelona squad should the transfer not materialise, Suarez was left out of the team that took on Elche in the Joan Gamper Trophy on Saturday and appears to have played his final game for Barcelona.
