Mendy arrived at Chelsea from Rennes during the transfer window and has immediately made an impact, taking the gloves from the out-of-form Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The Senegal international has kept clean sheets in three of his four games for the Blues and pulled off some impressive saves against the Red Devils on Saturday.
A late save from a curling Marcus Rashford shot was especially memorable, and Shaw was frustrated and impressed by the 28-year-old ‘keeper.
‘I feel like we created the better chances,’ Shaw told Manchester United’s official website. ‘Their keeper made wonderful saves at times.
‘I was right behind it [Rashford’s shot] and, like I said, their keeper was very good today. He made a couple of very good saves that kept them in the game.’
Mendy did have one unusual moment when he nearly scored a bizarre own goal as he played a wayward pass towards Thiago Silva.
Completely misplacing the ball, he very nearly played it straight into his own goal, but it slid past the post and out for a corner.
It was otherwise an assured and impressive performance from the giant ‘keeper, though, as he earned his side a point.
Shaw was pleased to see his own side keep a clean sheet after struggling to do so this season so far.
‘We defended much better than we have been, especially against a very good team like Chelsea who have high-quality players all around the pitch,’ said the England international.
‘I feel like they didn’t really create much, and we did well in that aspect. But higher up the pitch we should have maybe grabbed a goal, or maybe even two, and taken the three points.’
