As United pushed for a winner with just over 10 minutes remaining, Shaw angered United fans by opting not to make an overlapping run for Fernandes on the edge of Chelsea’s area.
As Fernandes received the ball from Fred on United’s left flank, the Portuguese midfielder held out his left arm to indicate a run on his outside.
Shaw, however, stayed put on the inside position and Fernandes was forced to play the ball away from Chelsea’s goal, allowing the visitors to squeeze up.
The clip of Shaw’s reluctance to bomb forward did the rounds on Twitter after the game and quickly annoyed United fans who are demanding more attacking prowess from the left-back.
One United fan wrote: ‘Luke Shaw just standing there as Bruno Fernandes orders him countless times to overlap Marcus Rashford or Bruno himself. Annoying thing is Shaw has the ability to do so but he chooses not to. Can’t see us progressing as a team with weak links.’
Another United supporter added: ‘Shaw just does not deserve to be a Utd player. Multiple times both Fernandes and Rashford ask him for an overlapping run, he just sits back. Telles please for next match.’
A third United fan added: ‘Anyone want to defend what Shaw was doing here? Unforgivable. He should be dropped for refusing to overlap. No idea where Telles was tonight.’
One wrote: ‘Shaw did the right thing and fernandes should’ve just rolled it back to him so he could put it in.’
Another added: ‘He’s taken a lot of stick on here for not overlapping but I honestly think Fernandes pointing was just for show. Would have been the biggest waste of Shaw’s time and energy.’
